On Wednesday, 21 May, the Managing Director of VR
Business Brokers, José María Varas, gave a conference under the title "Fusiones
y Adquisiciones en el Segmento de las Pymes", analyzing the distinct
mechanisms associated with these operations, presenting a complete vision about
the promising future foreshadowed by the sector of intermediation in the buying
and selling of small and large companies. The address included tackling
questions such as the challenge of survival faced by conglomerates due to
factors such as lack of succession and the course of consolidation by mergers,
acquisitions or sale which are the logical departures that guarantee success. The sector of Capital Risk and Private Equity is
looking for new investment opportunities, apart from those of large companies;
and the small and medium-sized enterprises represent an opportunity for
investors looking for new alternatives. There are many opportunities for sale
at reasonable prices having high growth potential in a fragmented market. From
the capital investors' perspective, the last few years have introduced a rise
in bank funded transactions with the sale of businesses at very high
prices. These high values placed on these companies have put the
feasibility of these transactions at risk, which places pressure on the
acquired company to complete unreasonable business objectives.
José María Varas also spoke about the necessity of
professionalism within the sector of mediation in the buying and selling
of small and medium sized enterprises, using chains of experts in valuations,
negotiation and sale of the enterprises and, know-how and experience that
facilitate these types of transactions.
The session was presented and moderated by Paz
Ambrosy, Professor of
Entrepreneurship Management at IE Business School.
El 21 de Mayo, el Consejero
Delegado de VR Business Brokers, José María Varas, ofreció una
conferencia que, bajo el título de "Fusiones
y Adquisiciones en el Segmento de las Pymes", analizó los distintos
mecanismos asociados a estas operaciones, ofreciendo una completa visión sobre
el prometedor futuro que se le augura al sector de la intermediación en la
compra y venta de pequeñas y medianas empresas. Una ponencia en la que se
abordaron cuestiones como el reto de supervivencia al que se enfrentan las
empresas familiares a causa diversos factores como la falta de sucesión, y cómo
los procesos de consolidación por la vía de fusiones, adquisiciones o venta son
la salida lógica para garantizar su continuidad.
El sector de Capital
Riesgo y Private Equity está buscando nuevas oportunidades de inversión diferentes
a la gran empresa y la pyme pequeña y mediana representa una oportunidad para
inversores que buscan nuevas alternativas, hay muchas oportunidades de compra a
precios razonables y mucho recorrido para crecer en un mercado atomizado. Desde
el punto de vista del capital inversor, en los últimos años se han realizado
transacciones muy apalancadas con recursos bancarios y se han pagado precios
muy altos por las empresas vendidas. Las altas valoraciones pagadas pone en
riesgo la viabilidad de algunas transacciones, lo cual presiona a la empresa
adquirida a cumplir con objetivos de negocios en muchos casos irrealizables.
José María Varas
también manifestó la necesidad de profesionalizar el sector de la
intermediación en la compra y venta de pymes, con redes expertas en la valoración, negociación y venta de las empresas y
un know how y experiencia que permita llevar a buen término este tipo de
transacciones.
La sesión fue presentada y moderada por Paz Ambrosy, profesora de
Gestión Emprendedora del IE Business School.

month, in Madrid, now to be held on the first Thursday of every month. The objective
here is to provide an informal atmosphere for the alumni to increase their
network while enjoying themselves. The
first Alumni BOTM was held on Thursday, 8 May 2008, at Kabila Bar (corner of Calle
Velazquez and Calle Juan Bravo). The alumni enjoyed a delicious dinner free-of-charge
in addition to discounted drinks.

El primer BOTM tuvo lugar
el 8 de Mayo en Kabila Bar (Calle Velázquez esquina con Calle Juan Bravo). En
esta primera ocasión la cena fue gratuita y las bebidas tuvieron un descuento

On 14 May, the Lisbon Alumni Club got the opportunity
to meet Professor Rui Vieira,
Visiting Professor in Management Control at IE Business School and Assistant
Professor in Management Control and Accounting, Universidade Nova de Lisboa,
Portugal.At this meeting, Professor Vieira gave a session
titled The Balanced Scorecard, in
which, he talked about its application as well as its advantages and
disadvantages. The alumni also got a chance to network with each other via a
cocktail served after the lecture.
The session was attended by Divya Goel, Associate Director of the Alumni Association, the
Lisbon Club President, Francisco Machado,
and Lisbon IE Office Representative, Ines
Holtremann.
After the session, the alumni also got together for
Lisbon Alumni Club's monthly Alumni Dinner to foster their strong network as
well as to welcome new people to the club.
El 14 de mayo, el Club de Antiguos Alumnos de Lisboa tuvo la oportunidad
de reunirse con Rui Vieira, Profesor
Visitante de Control de Gestión del IE Business School y Profesor Ayudante de
Control de Gestión de la Universidad Nova de Lisboa, Portugal.
En esta reunión, el profesor Vieira bajo el título de El Balanced Scorecard,
trató su aplicación, así como sus ventajas y desventajas. Los antiguos
alumnos también tuvieron la oportunidad de desarrollar su network a través del
cocktail que tuvo lugar después de la conferencia.

Mensual del Club de Antiguos Alumnos de Lisboa para reforzar su network así
como para dar la bienvenida a nuevos antiguos alumnos al Club.
On 7 May 2008, we had the presentation of the book "Los
diez pecados capitales del jefe" by Leo Farache, Executive MBA 1990 from IE
Business School. The presentation was done by Manuel Pimentel, President of
Editorial Almuzara and Ex-Minister of Labour Force in Spain; Felix Muñoz,
Marketing Director of Telefonica Spain; Alfonso Villalonga, President of Amref
(African Foundation for Medicine and Research) and Victoria Gimeno, Director of
IE Alumni Association.
Leo Farache has written this book based on his own experiences,
having worked in different areas and positions, having had opportunities to
know many different bosses in action, giving him an idea about what a boss can
do and what s/he cannot do.
We all spend a lot of time working and we understand
how a boss can stimulate talent, happiness as well as productivity. In this
book, he has analyzed this through more than 60 real situations. We recommend
his book to all our alumni.
El día 7 de mayo se
presento en el IE el libro "Los diez pecados capitales del jefe" de Leo
Farache, Executive MBA 1990 por el IE Business School. En su presentación,
acompañaron al autor Manuel Pimentel, Presidente de Editorial Almuzara y ex
Ministro de Trabajo de España, Felix Muñoz, Director de Marketing de Telefónica
de España, Alfonso Villalonga, Presidente de Amref (Fundación Africana para la
Medicina e Investigación) y Victoria Gimeno, Directora de Antiguos Alumnos del
IE.
Para escribir este libro Leo Farache se ha basado en su
experiencia laboral en muchos sectores y distintas posiciones, en las que ha
tenido la oportunidad de conocer y ver a muchos jefes en acción, por lo que
puede hablar de lo que debe y lo que no debe hacer un jefe.
On May 08, the IE Alumni in London
collected at Hotel Hesperia London for a conference by Bryan Husted, Director, Alumni Association Chair of Business Ethics
and Sustainability.
The lecture was titled The Dark Side of Business and in this
conference, he talked about "the banality of evil". He explained how our
everyday actions make all the difference, and how it is not only about the top
management of big corporate firms, but each manager in the whole system.
After the session, the alumni also got a
chance to talk with Bryan and other alumni during a cocktail.
The session was attended by Victoria Gimeno, Director of the IE Alumni Association and Divya Goel, Associate Director of the IE Alumni Association.
8 de mayo de 2008, los
antiguos alumnos del IE en Londres se reunieron en el Hotel Hesperia London
para asistir a una conferencia de Bryan
Husted, Director de la Cátedra de Ética
y Sostenibilidad de la Asociación de Antiguos Alumnos del IE Business
School.
La conferencia se tituló "The Dark Side of Business" y en ella,
se habló sobre "la banalidad de malvado". El profesor explicó como
nuestras acciones diarias marcan todas las diferencias, y como esto no es así
solo en la alta dirección de las grandes compañías, sino cada directivo en todo
el sistema.
Después de la
conferencia, los antiguos alumnos tuvieron la oportunidad de hablar con Bryan y
otros antiguos alumnos durante el cocktail.
