On 25 October, the book De ti depende, by Ignacio Álvarez de Mon, Professor and Director of the Human Resources Area at IE Business School, was presented.
On this
occasion, the invited speakers were Pilar Jerico, Director of Walker and
Newman, Juan Carlos Cubeiro, Director of Eurotalent and José María
Irisarri, President of Vertice 360. The session was introduced and
moderated by Victoria Gimeno, Director of IE Alumni Association.
In this book, the author, Ignacio
Álvarez de Mon, tackles an issue of great importance to modern society: the
capacity and will of the human being to direct their steps towards the best
destination. Through five main themes- motivation, communication,
personal growth, team work and leadership - the author gives a reflection where
the central argument revolves around individual freedom and responsibility.
Also, the book is full cases which are the stories of our time, our society,
that constantly repeat and with which many of us can identify.
The presentation was attended by a lot
of people and concluded with an open debate with the participants. A cocktail
was served after the session. On behalf of Ideas, we would like to encourage
Ignacio to continue writing.

día 25 de octubre, se presento en el aula magna del IE el libro De ti
depende escrito por Ignacio Alvarez de Mon, profesor y director del
área de Recursos Humanos del IE Business School.
El
libro fue presentado por Pilar Jericó, directora de Walker and
Newman, Juan Carlos Cubeiro, director de Eurotalent y José María Irisarri,
presidente de Vértice 360. La introducción y moderación corrió a cargo de Victoria
Gimeno, directora de la Antiguos Alumnos del IE Business School.
El
libro del profesor Álvarez de Mon aborda uno de los aspectos claves de la
sociedad moderna: la capacidad y voluntad del ser humano de dirigir sus pasos
hacia un destino mejor. Partiendo de cinco enunciados- motivación,
comunicación, desarrollo personal, trabajo en equipo y liderazgo - el autor
hilvana una reflexión en la que en el eje central está la libertad y
responsabilidad individuales.
El
libro además está lleno de casos, historias creibles y cercanas con las que
todos nos podríamos identificar.
La
presentación contó con una asistencia masiva, y finalizo en un coloquio con los
asistentes, al que siguió un cocktail. Desde Ideas, animamos a Ignacio para que

the North Auditorium at Ifema, Madrid, focusing on the title "BUSINESS IN
TIMES OF ECONOMIC UNCERTAINTY".This year, the conference will bring together alumni, professors and media with world leaders who will answer some questions, about the present times, which are coming to all our minds: What is really happening? What does the immediate future hold? How does all this affect me?
The annual conference is IE Alumni Association´s largest networking and training event bringing together the largest possible number of IE alumni. It provides a unique environment for the alumni to build their network while exchanging experiences with professionals and executives from various sectors and functional areas, from all over the world. Last year´s conference brought together over 1500 alumni from over 85 countries, making the Annual Alumni Conference one of the most important events in the IE calendar.
The event will consist of conferences and panels discussing the matter at hand and will close with this year´s well-known awards for Most United Class present at the conference and for Best Alumni Club.

La Conferencia Anual con más de 1500 asistentes en el año 2007, se ha convertido en un acto muy significativo para los antiguos alumnos y para el Instituto de Empresa. Saturday, September 06, 2008, the Zurich based IE Alumni Club met once again in
order to welcome a few new members.
Despite the rain and overall bad weather, approximately 25 fellow IE Alumni of diverse origins and professional backgrounds attended the event, where there was no shortage of food, drinks, or fun!

The Fourth IE Alumni BOTM took place on Thursday, September
04, at Fortuny. Alumni as well as professors joined together at one of the best
terraces in Madrid, taking advantage of a free drink provided on presenting IE

Last June, various students from the Máster de Gestión
y Control, along with their partners, went to visit the home of the
representative of the class: Tuscany.
Upon their arrival at the Pisa airport they rented
cars and went directly to visit the famous leaning tower, but not without
fueling up on a nice plate of Italian pasta beforehand, as you can appreciate
by the photo. In the "Piazza dei Miracoli" they enjoyed the incredible
cathedral, the Baptismal chapel and of course the views from the tower,
although to see it, the brave had to climb the 293 marble stairs! Not lacking
was a walk around the centre of Pisa and the banks of the Arno, without
forgetting to stop at the souvenir shops and ... the ice cream! And from the first
day it was clear that the ice cream in Italy... is like no other!
Towards the end of the afternoon they arrived in
Viareggio, the port city in which they spent the night. There they took
advantage by taking a dip in the sea, enjoying the incredible sunset and views
of the Apuan Alps.
The next morning the group was off to the Tuscan hills
of San Gimignano. In this small medieval town, every corner is a testament to
the time period in which the ancient nobles of the city competed amongst each
other to see who could construct the highest tower. Today 14 of the 72 towers
that existed have been preserved, for which it has been named the "Italian
Manhattan". Of course it is not only famous for its towers, but here you
can find some of the most famous ice cream shops in the world, valued by many
international prizes and since then many can in good faith attest to
that. They also took advantage of eating in a restaurant amidst the
hills, surrounded by the most typical of the Tuscan country.
From the land of Chianti they moved onto a city known
for its excellent art, Florence. The first night coincided with the
Spain-Russia Eurocup match, an occasion to dress in red and rally all of those
in part of the team, at risk of having a mishap with the recently defeated
Italians...the dinner went along with a tour of the nightlife in Florence in
hopes of verifying that the Madrid nightlife really is one of a kind.
The next day, the cultural visit continued along the
incredible corners of the city of Dante, from the church of Saint Croce and the
"Santa Maria dei Fiori" cathedral, passing through Pontevechio or Piazza della
Signoria. Of course they could not miss a visit to the Uffizi Museum and a walk
around the San Lorenzo Market to make last minute purchases. The visit to
Florence ended with a beautiful view of the Piazzale Micchelangelo, where they
went to dinner in the birthplace of the class representative: Pistoia. The
biggest surprise came when they discovered that the restaurant that they had
reserved was not what they thought but actually the home of the parents of
Damiano, where a banner reading "Welcome to Italy" awaited them on a table on
the terrace where they shared the evening together with the family. The night
was the proved most interesting and they discovered hidden sides that can be
affirmed by the videos and photos, without going into detail regarding the
authentic Tuscan cuisine they were able to enjoy.
Unfortunately, vacations are not forever and the next
day they had to return to Madrid. All together they returned to the airport in
Pisa and back to reality that is, thinking of their next "meeting" as a class.
El pasado mes de Junio, varios compañeros del Máster de Gestión y Control,
junto a sus parejas, se marcharon a visitar la tierra del delegado de clase: la
Toscana.
A su llegada al aeropuerto de Pisa alquilaron varios coches y se fueron
directamente a visitar la famosa Torre inclinada, no sin antes reponer fuerzas
con un buen plato de pasta italiana, como puede apreciarse en la foto. En la
"Piazza dei Miracoli" disfrutaron de la impresionante catedral, el baptisterio
y por supuesto las vistas desde la torre, aunque para ello los más valientes
tuvieron que subir los 293 peldaños de mármol ! Tampoco faltó un paseíto por el
centro de Pisa y las orillas del Arno, sin olvidarse de las tiendas de
souvenirs y... los helados! Y es que desde el primer día quedó claro que los
helados como en Italia...en ningún sitio!
Al final de la tarde llegaron a Viareggio, localidad marítima donde
pasarían la noche. Allí aprovecharon para darse un bañito en el mar disfrutando
de una increíble puesta de sol y las vistas a los Alpes Apuanos.
A la mañana siguiente el grupo se dirigió a través de las colinas toscanas
a San Gimignano. En este pequeño pueblo
medieval, cada rincón te traslada a la época en la que los antiguos nobles de
la ciudad competían entre sí para ver quien construía la torre más alta. Hoy en
día se conservan 14 de las 72 torres que existieron en su día, y por ello se ha
ganado el sobrenombre de "La Manhatan italiana". Claro que no solo es famosa
por sus torres, aquí se encuentran algunas de las heladerías más famosas del
mundo, varios premios internacionales lo avalan y desde luego todos dieron
buena fe de ello. Igualmente aprovecharon para comer en un restaurante en medio
de las colinas, rodeados de la más típica campiña toscana.
Desde la tierra del Chianti se trasladaron a la ciudad del arte por
excelencia, Florencia. La primera noche coincidió con el partido de la
Eurocopa España-Rusia, ocasión para
vestirse de rojo y animar todos juntos a nuestra selección, a riesgo de tener
algún percance con los recién derrotados italianos...a la cena seguiría una ruta
por la noche florentina para comprobar si es cierto eso de que como la noche
madrileña no hay nada.
Al día siguiente, siguió la visita cultural recorriendo los increíbles
rincones de la ciudad de Dante, desde la iglesia de Santa Croce a la catedral
"Santa Maria dei Fiori", pasando por Pontevechio o Piazza della Signoria.
Tampoco podían faltar una visita al Museo de los Uffizi y un paseo por el
Mercado de San Lorenzo para realizar las últimas compras. La visita a Florencia
finalizó con la preciosa vista desde el Piazzale Micchelangelo, desde donde
salieron hacia una cena en la ciudad natal del delegado: Pistoia. La mayor
sorpresa llegó al descubrir que el restaurante que habían reservado no era tal,
sino la casa de los padres de Damiano, donde una pancarta con "Bienvenidos a
Italia" les esperaba presidiendo una mesa en la terraza donde compartieron
velada todos juntos con la familia. La noche resultó de lo más interesante y se
descubrieron facetas ocultas que pueden constatarse gracias a los videos y
fotos, por no hablar de la verdadera comida toscana de la que pudieron
disfrutar.
This
September, IE Alumni Association organised its very first IE International
Update: Business in India in Mumbai from September 08 to September 10, as part of the international training offered to IE alumni.
Mumbai (formerly
called Bombay) is regarded as the financial capital of India. India with a huge
market of more than 1.2 billion people is one of the fastest growing economies
in the world today. Mumbai has a population of more than 18 million inhabitants
and is also home to Bollywood, one of the world´s largest film industries.
This IE
International Update aiming at Business in India was held at the Taj Mahal
Palace and Towers hotel, one of the best in Mumbai. The course, which was
attended by alumni from all over the world, contained sessions about the Indian
Economy, challenges and opportunities, by entrepreneurs, industry experts and representatives of
important institutions like the Spanish Chamber of Commerce, as well as company
visits. In addition to the sessions, the course also included a tour of the
city on Sunday, September 07.
The

Spain in Mumbai; Harsshh Shodhan,
CEO, Aaragon BPO; Karan Gupta,

Nitish Shah, Director, NV Machinery Pvt. Ltd.; Gursharn Singh Sawhney, Chief Financial

The
participants also got the chance to visit 2 leading companies. The first visit
was conducted on Monday, September 08, 2008 to India Assistance (a Mapfre Company) which engages in providing road

Yankov, Operations Manager, India Assistance hosted the visit and talked
about the company, the market and the challenges faced by the company in India.
The
second visit was conducted on Tuesday, September 09, 2008, to Indira Container Terminal Pvt. Ltd.
This is a Joint Venture Company between Dragados SPL &
Gammon which is now building a new terminal at the Mumbai harbour. Antonio P. Passaro, Chief Executive Officer, Indira
Container Terminal Pvt. Ltd. explained us their experience in India
highlighting the strengths and weaknesses, the positive as well as negative
aspects of being in such a diverse economy.
This IE
International Update Programme aimed at providing the attendants with a picture
of the challenges and opportunities of doing business in India, as well as of
the strengths and weaknesses of the economy.
In
addition, it gave the participants the opportunity to develop contacts with
Indian clients, companies, suppliers and local partners, as well as strengthen
their network with other IE alumni.
"The feedback
of the programme has been highly positive. The alumni have expressed their
satisfaction and a keen interest in taking part in our future editions",
said Victoria Gimeno, Director of the IE Alumni Association. In
this series, we plan to conduct our future IE International Updates in cities of Dubai and Shanghai as well
as try to incorporate new regions.
We hope
this was an enriching and a fun experience for all the participants.

Asociación de Antiguos Alumnos ha organizado el primer IE International Update:
Business in India en Mumbai del 8 al 10 de septiembre, como parte de la
formación ofrecida a los antiguos alumnos del IE.
Mumbai (llamada
formalmente Bombay) es considerada como la capital financiera de la
India. El mercado de la India cuenta con más de 1.2 billones de personas
y es unas de las economías con más rápido crecimiento del mundo actual.
Mumbai tiene una población de más de 18 millones de ciudadanos y es el
centro de Bollywood, uno de los sectores del cine más grande del mundo.
El IE International
Update centrado en Business in India fue celebrado en el Taj Mahal Palace and
Towers Hotel, uno de los mejores de Mumbai. El curso, al que asistieron
antiguos alumnos de todo el mundo, ofreció clases sobre la economía de la
India, los desafíos y las oportunidades, impartido por emprendedores, expertos
de la industria y representantes de instituciones importantes así como visitas
a la Cámara de Comercio de España, y visitas a empresas. Además de estas
clases, el curso también incluyó una visita guiada a la ciudad el domingo 07 de
septiembre.

Los participantes
tuvieron la oportunidad de visitar dos empresas de primer nivel. La
primera visita tuvo lugar el lunes 8 de septiembrede 2008 a India Assistance
(una empresa de Mapfre) que da asistencia en carretera en la India.
La visita fue guiada por Jose Antonio Barbadillo, Director de Desarrollo
de Negocio, India Assistance y Ivan Yankov, Director de Operaciones,
donde hablaron sobre la empresa, el mercado y los desafíos que se puede
encontrar una empresa en la India.
La segunda visita tuvo
lugar el día martes, 9 de septiembre de 2008, a Indira Container
Terminal Pvt. Ltd. un joint
venture con Dragados
SPL & Gammon
los cuales están construyendo una terminal nueva en el
puerto de Mumbai. Antonio P. Passaro, Ejecutivo
Principal, Indira Container Terminal Pvt. Ltd. explicó su experiencia en la
India subrayando los puntos fuertes y débiles, los aspectos positivos y
negativos de de una economía tan diversa.
Este IE International
Update Programme tuvo el propósito de ofrecer los asistentes a modo
de ilustración de los desafíos y las oportunidades de hacer negocios en
la India, y los puntos fuertes y débiles de la economía.
El programa también
ofreció la oportunidad a los asistentes de crear contactos con clientes,
empresas, proveedores y socios locales así como aumentar su network con
otros antiguos alumnos del IE.

highly positive. The alumni have expressed their satisfaction and a keen
interest in taking part in our future editions", dijo Victoria Gimeno,
Directora de la Asociación de Antiguos Alumnos del IE. En este sentido, planeamos que a los IE
International Updates de Dubai y Shanghai también se incorporen nuevas
regiones.
Esperamos que esta
experiencia fuese enriquecedora y divertida para todos los participantes.
On 15 September, the India IE Alumni Club
got together to have an IE ALUMNI DINNER
at the Taj Mahal Hotel, with Victoria Gimeno,
Director of IE Alumni Association and Divya
Goel, Associate Director of IE Alumni Association.
In this dinner, the alumni got the chance to meet old friends and increase their networking while enjoying a lovely dinner. The diverse alumni groups also got to hear each other´s opinions and perspectives on various topics, including the Indian economy, its cultural differences.
It was a great opportunity for the Indian alumni to meet each other and we hope to have many more events in India in the future.
El 15 de septiembre, los antiguos alumnos del IE en la India tuvieron una cena, IE ALUMNI DINNER, con Victoria Gimeno, Directora de la Asociación de Antiguos Alumnos IE Business School y con Divya Goel, Directora Asociada de la Asociación de Antiguos Alumnos del IE Business School.
En la cena, los antiguos alumnos tuvieron la oportunidad de encontrase con sus amigos y desarrollar el networking disfrutando de una cena. Los antiguos alumnos pudieron intercambiar opiniones y puntos de vista sobre varios temas como, la economía en India, y las diferencias culturales.
Fue una gran oportunidad para los antiguos alumnos en India para conocerse y esperamos que se organicen más encuentros en el futuro.
In memory and honor of Jorge Sangrador Martínez, who died in the
air accident in Madrid Barajas on August the 20th.
How excited we were when we finished the master and when our
friend Jorge was awarded best student of all the 2004/2005 MBA classes. That
day was his day and his friends and S2 classmates shared his achievement as our
own. We were proud of ourselves for having him as a friend.
We believe that we have never written anything like this to you
before... Still in our memories are the hundreds of emails, text messages, hours
and hours of chat; but never a letter. Don´t worry, it is not anything formal
or serious, we just want to write you a few lines to remember the way you were.
That year of the MBA united us all greatly and it joins us
together again today, but with a different purpose. There aren´t any case
studies, team work sessions or moments of fun, now we have tears in our eyes, a
feeling of emptiness and disbelief.
All that´s left is to remember with happiness all the moments we
shared together, with Jose, with the two Anas, with Monica, with Carola, with
Bego, with Ricky, with Antonio, with Bea and with everyone else. We didn´t have
time to say goodbye to each other, we weren´t even able to see you become what
we all expected years before - someone with a long and successful career, a
promising future and the best possibilities in life.
Jorge, these lines go to thanking you for who you were, for your
friendship and trust, for helping us so many times and for knowing how to
listen to us and later give us advice. We will hold you forever in our
memories.

En memoria y homenaje a Jorge Sangrador Martínez. Fallecido en el accidente aéreo de Madrid, Barajas, el
pasado 20 de agosto.
Qué emocionados estábamos cuando terminamos el máster y nuestro
Jorge había sido premiado el mejor alumno de todas las clases del MBA
2004/2005. Aquel día fue su día y su logro lo hicimos propio todos sus amigos y
compañeros del S2. Estábamos orgullosos de nosotros mismos por ser sus amigos.
Creo que nunca antes te habíamos escrito algo así... En nuestra
memoria están los cientos de emails, sms, horas y horas de chat, pero nunca una
carta. No te asustes, que no se trata de nada serio ni formal, simplemente
queremos escribirte unas líneas recordando cómo eras.
Aquel año del máster nos había unido íntimamente a todos y
vuelve a unirnos hoy, pero con un propósito diferente, ya no son los casos, el
trabajo en equipo o para pasar momentos gratos, ahora son las lágrimas en
nuestros ojos, el sentimiento de vacío e incredulidad. Todos estamos heridos.
Sólo nos queda brindar por ti y por tu recuerdo con Jose, con
las dos Anas, con Mónica, con Carola, con Bego, con Ricky, con Antonio, con Bea
y con todos los demás. No hubo tiempo de despedirnos, no nos alcanzó ni
siquiera para verte convertido en lo que años antes todos veíamos como ejemplo
de carrera profesional, como un futuro prometedor o como el mejor de los
destinos.
Jorge, vayan estas líneas para agradecerte por ser como eras,
por tu amistad y confianza, por ayudarnos tantas veces y por saber oírnos para
al final darnos tu consejo. Te tendremos presente por siempre en nuestro
recuerdo.
