Annual Conference 2008 - English logo.JPGWe are pleased to inform you about our next IE Annual Alumni Conference to be held on Friday, 21 November, 2008 in the North Auditorium at Ifema, Madrid, focusing on the title "BUSINESS IN TIMES OF ECONOMIC UNCERTAINTY".

This year, the conference will bring together alumni, professors and media with world leaders who will answer some questions, about the present times, which are coming to all our minds: What is really happening? What does the immediate future hold? How does all this affect me?

The annual conference is IE Alumni Association´s largest networking and training event bringing together the largest possible number of IE alumni. It provides a unique environment for the alumni to build their network while exchanging experiences with professionals and executives from various sectors and functional areas, from all over the world. Last year´s conference brought together over 1500 alumni from over 85 countries, making the Annual Alumni Conference one of the most important events in the IE calendar.

The event will consist of conferences and panels discussing the matter at hand and will close with this year´s well-known awards for Most United Class present at the conference and for Best Alumni Club.

The Annual Alumni Conference is our most important event which reflects our mission of training and networking and hence we would like you and your colleagues to accompany us on this special day. The Spanish employment market shows signs of great deterioration, since unemployment is increasing rapidly; we must remember that the employment market is a driving force of key importance for economic growth. Indeed, the significant increase in employment generated by the Spanish economy from 1995 (when there were 12.1 million employed people) to 2007 (when the figure of 20.5 million employed people was reached) has led to a significant increase in the salary mass. This means more income, which has led to a greater demand for consumer goods and housing; in other words, increased production of consumer goods and more construction. VCP-410 In short, there is more economic growth and employment, which, in turn, increases income, etc. Much of this employment has been created around the immigrant population, which also has meant more salaries, more consumption and more construction: a "virtuous circle" based largely on the growth of employment in the construction sector. But, what is happening now that employment is contracting, unemployment is increasing rapidly and construction is coming to a standstill? A "vicious circle" in which the salary mass is reduced, together with consumption and home-buying, which increases unemployment even further. Workers who have lost their jobs buy fewer goods and services, 70-640 and businesses are forced to reduce their production, staff and investment. The weakness of the employment market also will restrict salary increases, which is encouraged by inflation control. Inflation has returned to moderate levels and, in November, stood at 3.6%. A clear sign of this depression is that retail trade sales have fallen since December 2007. Like a dog chasing its tail, consumption falls because Spanish families are suffering the effects of an increase in unemployment, the reduced value of their homes, the fall of stock market assets, and restricted access to credit.
