On June 23, 2009, the second Open Classroom on the Energetic Sector took place, and was coordinated by Manuel Reina, Applus Utilities and Energy Sector Director as well as Ex E-Business 2001, and which included the presence of David Pérez, partner of the international consultancy group Eclareon, specialized in renewable energy, and of Rodrigo Morell, Partner and General Manager of Creara Consultores, an engineering company devoted to energy saving and efficiency. In a shared conference titled "Las tres Fuentes energéticas: tradicionales, renovables y el ahorro energético. Ventajas y oportunidades", both speakers made a comparative analysis of the costs of generating energy with both renewable and fossil sources, stressing the importance of the rapprochement of figures that has been taking place in these last years, especially  in relation to solar photovoltaic energy, solar thermal energy and wind power.  

In relation to this, David Pérez mentioned "the moment when us citizens will prefer generating our own energy instead of buying it is not too far away, due, mostly, to the optimization of the setting-up costs, although this situation will be even more evident when there is a change in the current law that allows any energy producer to sell its surplus, as this is still not possible under the Spanish system, but already exists in other countries around us, such as Italy, or more recently, Germany".

Additionally, the ESCO's (Energetic Services Companies) sphere of influence as a link between fossil and renewable sources and energetic saving was commented on. With his intervention, Morell emphasized on the importance of energetic services companies as the solution to the energetic problem through efficiency, as they are "true energy improvement project promoters whose services - design, execution, financing, monitoring and saving verification-- are included in the project cost and, in the end, are reimbursed to the client through economic savings generated because of the energetic saving achieved".

El pasado 23 de junio se celebró en el IE la segunda sesión del Aula Abierta del Sector Energético, foro coordinado por Manuel Reina, director Sector Utilities y Energía de Applus y Ex E-Business 2001 por el IE Business School, que contó en esta ocasión con la presencia de David Pérez, socio de la consultora internacional especializada en energías renovables eclareon y Rodrigo Morell, socio y director general de Creara Consultores, empresa de ingeniería dedicada al ahorro y a la eficiencia energética. En una intervención compartida bajo el título "Las tres fuentes energéticas: tradicionales, renovables y el ahorro energético. Ventajas y oportunidades" ambos ponentes realizaron un análisis comparativo de los costes de generación entre las fuentes fósiles y las renovables, recalcando el importante acercamiento de cifras que se ha producido en los últimos años, especialmente en lo concerniente a la solar fotovoltaica, solar térmica y eólica. En este sentido, David Pérez señaló que "no está tan lejos el momento en el que los ciudadanos preferiremos generar nuestra propia energía a comprarla, debido principalmente a la optimización de costes de instalación, aunque esta situación será aun más patente cuando se produzca un cambio en la regulación actual que permita a cualquier productor de energía vender sus excedentes, algo que aún no es posible en el sistema español, pero que ya existe en otros países de nuestro entorno como Italia o, más recientemente, Alemania".

Además, se abordó el ámbito de actuación de las ESCO (empresas de servicios energéticos) como puente entre las fuentes fósiles, las renovables y el ahorro energético. Morell destacó en su intervención la importancia de las empresas de servicios energéticos como solución al problema energético a través de la eficiencia, pues se trata de "auténticas promotoras de proyectos de mejora energética, cuyos servicios -diseño, ejecución, financiación, monitorización y verificación de los ahorros, etc- se hayan incluidos en el coste del proyecto y, al final, son reembolsados al cliente gracias a los ahorros económicos generados por el ahorro energético conseguido".

Shanghai is one of Asia's key cities in terms of economy, finance and logistics. With an annual economic growth of more than 9% and a population of more than 20 million, it is regarded as the financial capital of China.

The IE International Update was held at School of Management, Fudan University, one of the most prestigious universities in China with an international reputation for academic excellence. Classes from Fudan and IE professors were mixed with lectures from entrepreneurs and professionals working in China, as well as representatives of official institutions.

The programme was attended by alumni from different countries, Global MBA students and International Executive MBA Bi-weekly students, and included sessions about the situation of the Chinese market and the challenges facing corporate China, as well as company visits to leading firms in the region.

Speakers included alumni, entrepreneurs and executives: Mr. Albert Krisskoy, IE IXMBA 2007, China Chief Representative, Tradeco, Comercio y Cooperación S.L. and IE China Office Representative; Mr. Julián Zulueta, IE MBA 1986, General Manager, Qingdao, Temoinsa; Mr. Francisco Soler, Shanghai Office Director, Garrigues; Mr. Jose Miguel Montoya, IE EXMBA 2003, Partner, Transaction Services, KPMG; Mr. Weiwen Han, Partner, Bain & Company China Inc.; Mr. Ramón Gascón, China Country Manager, BBVA; Mr. Carlos Latorre, Vice‐president and Head of R&D for Asia Pacific Division of Schindler; Mr. Tim Fleming, Managing Director, Treasury and Trade Solutions Sales Head - China, Citigroup Global Transaction Services (GTS); Mr. Jose C. Martos, IE EXMBA 2003, General Manager, Maxit Shanghai; Mr. Min Liang, Projects Development Director, June Yao Group; and Ms. Linda Zhang, Principal, Heidrick & Struggles China Office. The course also included sessions from Fudan University professors: Dr. Xiaoya Lang, Dr. Jun Wang, Dr. Yijia Jing, Dr. Chao Chen, Dr. Chenghua Zeng, and Dr. Zhiguo Li.

The participants also had the opportunity to visit three companies in Shanghai: The first one was Chint where they were addressed by Mr. Yin Zhang, General Manager, International Trade Department. The company is a leading player in the Low‐voltage electrical, Power Transmission and Distribution industries in China, with a turnover of over $2 Billion in 2006. In the year of 2006, Chint ranked 15th in the list of top 100 Companies released by Forbes, which evaluated all private companies (both those listed as public and not) in China.

The second company visit was to Nokia Siemens Networks Shanghai where they were addressed by Mr. Jose Antonio Menendez Herrero (ExMBA 2007), Head of Shanghai Factory. NSN is one of the largest telecommunications solutions suppliers in the world, created as the result of a joint venture between Siemens AG's COM division (minus its Enterprise business unit) and Nokia's Network Business Group. It operates in approximately 150 countries worldwide, and has about 60,000 employees.

The third company visit was to Shanghai Krupp Stainless Co. Ltd. where they were addressed by Mr. Rowe, SKS General Manager. This company is a joint venture between Krupp Thyssen Stainless and Shanghai Pudong Iron & Steel, formed initially to build a stainless steel plant in Pudong under the name Shanghai Krupp Stainless (SKS). The plant now represents an overall investment of approximately $600 million.

The participants also got a chance to visit Antai School of Business for a networking event with the Executive MBA students followed by a Chinese Dinner.

All in all, the IE International Update Programme tried to provide the attendants with a picture of the challenges and opportunities of doing business in China, as well as of the strengths and weaknesses of the one of the biggest economies of the world.

During the week, the participants had the opportunity to develop contacts with Chinese clients, suppliers and local partners, as well as to strengthen their network with IE students, graduates and professors.

"This course acts an opportunity for the alumni to get an overview of one of the most fascinating economies around the world which is growing in spite of the present economic uncertainty, allowing the participants to strengthen and develop their network among students, alumni, directors and institutions, making it an unforgettable experience for all. Entre los días 25 y 29 de mayo de 2009 en Shanghai, la Asociación de Antiguos Alumnos del IE ha organizado el tercer IV IE International Update: Business in China. Este curso forma parte de los programas de formación continua ofrecidos  para antiguos alumnos.

Shanghai es actualmente una de las ciudades clave de Asia en términos de economía, finanzas y logística. Con un crecimiento anual superior al 9% y una población de 20 millones se considera como la capital económica de China.

El IE International Update tuvo lugar en el School of Management, Universidad de Fudan, una de las universidades más prestigiosas de China con una reputación internacional de excelencia académica. Las clases mezclaron profesores de Fudan y del IE con ponencias de emprendedores y profesionales que trabajan en China, así como representantes institucionales.

El programa, en el que participaron antiguos alumnos y estudiantes del Global MBA y del International Executive MBA Bi-weekly de diferentes nacionalidades, incluyó conferencias sobre la situación de la economía china, retos a los que se enfrentan las empresas, así como visitas a compañías que operan en esta región.

La empresa es líder en Electricidad de Bajo-Voltaje, Transmisión de Energía e Industrias de Distribución en China, con una facturación superior a dos mil millones de dólares en 2006. En el año 2006, CHINT ocupó el puesto número 15 en la lista de las Top 100 Empresas publicado por Forbes, que evaluó todas las compañías privadas (tanto las que aparecen como públicas y las que no) en China

Durante esta semana, los participantes tuvieron la oportunidad de desarrollar contactos con clientes chinos, proveedores y socios locales, así como fortalecer el network entre los antiguos alumnos, los alumnos actuales, los profesores y empresarios y directivos que desarrollan su actividad en China.

"Este curso  supone para los participantes la oportunidad de conocer una de las economías más fascinantes del mundo, que sigue creciendo  a pesar de la situación económica mundial, permitiéndoles estrechar y desarrollar su network con alumnos, antiguos alumnos, empresarios e instituciones, convirtiendo este aprendizaje en una experiencia inolvidable. Desde aquí animo a todos a participar en nuestro próximo IE Update que se celebrará en septiembre en India", en palabras de Victoria Gimeno, directora de la Asociación de Antiguos Alumnos del IE. El próximo IE International Update: Business in India se celebrará los días 7, 8, 9 y 10 de septiembre en Mumbai.
