From 26 May to 30 May in Shanghai, the IE Business
School Alumni Association organised the III
IE International Update: Business in China, as part of
the international training offered to IE alumni.
Shanghai is one of Asia's key cities in terms of
economy, finance and logistics. With an annual economic growth of more than 9%
and a population of more than 13 million, it is regarded as the financial
capital of China.
The IE International Update was held at
Fudan University, one of the most prestigious universities in China with an
international reputation for academic excellence. Classes from Fudan and IE
professors were mixed with lectures from entrepreneurs and professionals
working in China, as well as representatives of official institutions.
The programme was attended by alumni from different
countries, Global MBA students and International Executive MBA Bi-weekly
students, and included conferences about the situation of the Chinese market
and the challenges facing corporate China, as well as company visits to leading
firms in the region.
Speakers included alumni, entrepreneurs and
executives: Carlos Latorre, Vice-President
and Head of R&D for Asia Pacific Division of Schindler; Alberto Fernández, General Manager of
Torres China; Silvia Palacios,
Economic and Commercial Attaché of the Spanish Trade Office in Shanghai; Jose C. Martos, General Manager of
Maxit Shanghai and Executive MBA 2003 by IE Business School; Ramón
Gascón, BBVA China Country Manager; Julián Zulueta, General Manager Temoinsa and MBA 1986 by IE
Business School; Francisco Soler,
Director of the Garrigues office in Shanghai; and Miguel Montoya, Senior Manager of Transaction Services at KPMG.
The course also included sessions from Fudan
University professors: Yu Yihong,
Professor of Economy; Qiu Lijin, Professor
of Marketing; Yue Dai, Professor
of Supply Chain Management; Ren
Mingchuan, Professor of Accounting; Zhang
Xiaorong, Professor of Chinese Financial System; Xiyou
He, Professor of Chinese Economy; and from IE Business School professors: Luis Solis and Associate Dean and Professor
of Operations Management y Ramón Díaz
Bernardo, Professor at IE.
During these sessions, many speakers
talked about the famous term Guanxi: personal
and friendly relations which, in China, are indispensable to business dealings
with administration, customers and suppliers. "In China, you first make friends
and then do business. Guanxi is not corruption, but just the way we do business
here." These personal relations take time to build and require constant
attention, but are key to getting results with the complex Chinese
administration.
The participants also had the
opportunity to visit two companies in Shanghai.
The first was Antolin Auto-Parts,
an international Spanish company with branches in over 20 countries and over
9,000 employees worldwide. Rafael Martín,
director of Shanghai operations, highlighted the challenges the company faces
in China and gave some recommendations for companies wanting to move into the
country. In his opinion, "the risk isn't to come to China, the risk is not to
come".
The second visit was to the Japanese company
Yakult Honsha Ltd., an expanding company which manufactures digestive health
drinks good for bowel movements. Yakult Honsha sells its products, including
the famous Yakult drink, all over the world.
All in all, the IE International Update
Programme tried to provide the attendants with a picture of the challenges and
opportunities of doing business in China, as well as of the strengths and
weaknesses of the one of the biggest economies of the world.
During the week, the participants had the opportunity
to develop contacts with Chinese clients, suppliers and local partners, as well
as to strengthen their network with IE students, graduates and professors.
"The balance of the programme has been highly
positive. The alumni have expressed their satisfaction ('an excellent course
delivering a very good vision of China') and a keen interest in taking part in
future editions. Consequently, we have organized similar courses in Dubai and
Mumbai to analyse the reality and
outlook of another regions", said Victoria
Gimeno, Director of the IE Alumni Association. In this series, the next IE International Update: Business in India will take place on
September 8, 9 and 10 in Mumbai.

Entre los días 26 y 30 de mayo en Shanghai, la Asociación de Antiguos
Alumnos del IE Business School ha organizado el tercer IE International Update: Business in China. Este curso forma parte
de los programas de formación continua ofrecidos para antiguos alumnos.
Shanghai es actualmente una de las ciudades clave de Asia en términos de
economía, finanzas y logística. Con un crecimiento anual superior al 9% y una
población de 1300 millones se considera como la capital económica de China.
El IE International Update tuvo lugar en la Universidad de Fudan, una de
las universidades más prestigiosas de China con una reputación internacional de
excelencia académica. Las clases mezclaron profesores de Fudan y del IE con
ponencias de emprendedores y profesionales que trabajan en China, así como
representantes institucionales.
El programa, en el que participaron antiguos alumnos y estudiantes del
Global MBA y del International Executive MBA Bi-weekly de diferentes
nacionalidades, incluyó conferencias sobre la situación de la economía china,
retos a los que se enfrentan las empresas, así como visitas a compañías que
operan en esta región.

Muchos ponentes trataron el famoso término Guanxi: relaciones personales y de amistad que en China son
indispensables para hacer negocios con la administración, clientes y
proveedores. "En China haz primero amigos y luego haz negocios. Guanxi no es
corrupción, pero es la forma de hacer negocios aquí". Esas relaciones
personales toman tiempo para construirse y requieren una constante atención,
pero son la clave para conseguir resultados con la compleja administración
China.
Los participantes también
tuvieron la oportunidad de visitar dos empresas en Shanghai. La primera fue Antolin
Auto- Parts, una compañía multinacional española con oficinas en veinte
países y más de 9000 empleados en todo el mundo. Rafael Martín, director de
Antolin en Shanghai, subrayó los retos de la compañía en China y dio algunas
recomendaciones para aquellas empresas que quisieran entrar en este país. En su
opinión "el riesgo no es venir a China, el riesgo es no venir".
La segunda visita fue a
una compañía japonesa Yakult Honsha Ltd.,
una compañía en expansión que fabrica bebidas para hacer la digestión
saludable, buenas para el tránsito intestinal. Yakult Honsha vende sus
productos en todo el mundo.
El programa IE
International Update se dirige a dar una imagen
muy clara de los retos y oportunidades de hacer negocios en China, así
como de las fortalezas y debilidades de una de las economías más grandes del
mundo.
Durante esta semana, los
participantes tuvieron la oportunidad de desarrollar contactos con clientes
chinos, proveedores y socios locales, así como fortalecer el network entre los
antiguos alumnos, los alumnos actuales, los profesores y empresarios y
directivos que desarrollan su actividad en China.
"El balance del programa
ha sido altamente positivo. Los antiguos alumnos han expresado su satisfacción
("un excelente curso que da una buena visión de China") y su entusiasmo por
repetir en futuras ediciones. Por ello, hemos organizado cursos similares en
Dubai y en Mumbai, para analizar la realidad y oportunidades en otras
regiones", en palabras de Victoria
Gimeno, directora de la Asociación de Antiguos Alumnos del IE. El próximo IE International Update: Business in India
se celebrará los días 8, 9 y 10 de septiembre en Mumbai.

Every year, IE Alumni Association, in order to promote
Networking and Training, organizes events and activities for IE alumni around
the world including Online sessions, Conferences, Sectorial classrooms, Open
classrooms, Association Thursdays, Book presentations and Leisure activities.
