On 26th of November the IE Lebanon Club Beirut Chapter organized and held a discussion panel at Le Bristol hotel Beirut about the “Economic Climate Change Post the Arab Spring Revolutions”.

The event started by a welcoming word by the co-president of the chapter Mr. Wael Kechli and then Mr. George De Chaderevian, co-president and panel moderator, launched the debate with the speakers who came from different knowledgeable backgrounds particularly political, economic and academic. The speakers were:

• Mr. Hedi Larbi, Country Director of the Middle East Department, World Bank Group

• Mr. Gonzalo Garland, Vice President for Development and Economics Professor at IE Business school

The event attracted a numerous audience, who participated a lot in the Q&A session. Media covered this event. This panel, being held in the Middle East, was considered to be of high significance and this is why the IE Lebanon Club Beirut Chapter felt the urge to get to the depth of the economic changes that are going to affect the Arab world and Lebanon as a result of the Arab Spring.

The event was followed by a networking cocktail.

El 26 de noviembre, IE Lebanon Club Beirut Chapter organizó y celebró una mesa redonda en el hotel Le Bristol Beirut sobre el “Cambio económico climático después de las revoluciones de la primavera árabe”.

El evento comenzó con unas palabras de bienvenida a cargo del co-presidente del chapter, Wael Kechli, después Jorge De Chaderevian, co-presidente y moderador del panel, inició el debate con oradores que tenían conocimientos en diversos ámbitos, sobre todo político, económico y académico. Los ponentes fueron:

• Sr. Hedi Larbi, Director del Departamento de Oriente Medio, World Bank Group

• Sr. Gonzalo Garland, Vicepresidente de Desarrollo y profesor de Economía de IE Business School

El evento atrajo a un numeroso público, que participó mucho en la sesión de Q & A. Medios de comunicación cubrieron este evento. Este panel celebrado en Oriente Medio, fue considerado de gran importancia y es por eso que Lebanon Club Beirut Chapter sintió la necesidad de llegar al fondo de los cambios económicos que van a afectar el mundo árabe y el Líbano como resultado de la primavera Árabe.

El evento fue seguido por un cóctel.

IE Lebanon Club Beirut Chapter held its “Annual Christmas Dinner” in Beirut at  Gemmayze on Wednesday, December 28, 2011. About 30 alumni attended the dinner, shared IE memories and gave some advice to the newly accepted students who also were present.

IE Lebanon Club Beirut Chapter celebró su “Cena Anual de Navidad” en Gemmayze (Beirut) el miércoles 28 de Diciembre del 2011. Unos 30 antiguos alumnos atendieron la cena, compartieron recuerdos de IE y dieron algunos consejos a los nuevos alumnos que también estaban allí.

IE Lebanon Club is proud to announce that it has held two meet and greet for all new Lebanese students admitted in the upcoming program intakes.

The first one was held at Bodguita del Medio in Beirut on August 19, where around 30 individuals, prospective students, alumni and friends had a chance to know each other and network around some well prepared Mojitos whilst bathing in the heat of a typical Cuban atmosphere. The August event was continued at the infamous Coup d’Etat pub later that evening.

The second meet and greet event was held at Linas Cafe in Beirut’s downtown district, where the remaining prospective students had a chance to share their expectations on what awaits them at IE and network with the alumni present. 

On the 25th of August 2011, IE Lebanon Club – Beirut Chapter organized an Iftar event during the Holy month of Ramadan in collaboration with the respective alumni associations of McGill, LSE and Yale in Lebanon. The event took place in “Lebneniyet” a Lebanese restaurant located in the downtown district of Beirut. The event was a huge success and was the first in Lebanon to gather more than 100 persons from top business schools around the world to network and enjoy a good meal.

The IE Lebanon Club held an ‘original’ fundraiser on Sunday, 1 May to raise money for the victims of the recent natural disasters in Japan.

The event was held at Behind the Green Door bar in Gemmayze, one of Beirut’s most happening clubs, and featured a performance by the notorious Lebanese band Who Killed Bruce Lee. Attendees had the chance to sing live alongside the Lebanese rockers to their favorite rock, punk and disco tracks. 

The event was a huge success with nearly 300 people in attendance rocking and dancing the night away and almost USD 2,000 raised! It was a great turnout as everybody was very excited and ready to come out for a good cause.

Once again,the committee board of IE Lebanon club proved itself to be an integral part of the international IE community by working in collaboration with IE Japan club in response to the huge disaster at Fukushima.

El IE Lebanon Club celebró una recaudación de fondos «original» el sábado 1 de mayo para conseguir dinero para las víctimas de los recientes desastres naturales en Japón.

El evento tuvo lugar en el bar Behind the Green Door de Gemmayze, uno de los clubes más de moda en Beirut, y ofreció una actuación del conocido grupo libanés Who Killed Bruce Lee. Los asistentes tuvieron ocasión de cantar en vivo y en directo sus temas favoritos rock, punk y  disco con los roqueros libaneses.

El evento fue un gran éxito: asistieron casi 300 personas, que rocanrolearon y bailaron toda la noche, y ¡se recaudaron casi 2 000 dólares! Un resultado magnífico, ya que todo el mundo estaba entusiasmado y dispuesto a ayudar a una buena causa.

Nuevamente, la junta directiva del IE Lebanon Club demostró ser una parte integral de la comunidad internacional del IE al colaborar con el Club de Japón del IE en respuesta al inmenso desastre de Fukushima.

The IE Lebanon Club Beirut Chapter held their May Bar of the Month (BOTM) Event on Tuesday, 3 May at the Dragonfly Pub in Gemmayze, Beirut. The event was attended by IE Lebanon Club members and alumni. There were also some IE Alumni attending from out of town, making it a truly international event.

El IE Lebanon Club Beirut Chapter celebró su evento Bar del Mes (BOTM) el martes 3 de mayo en el Dragonfly Pub de Gemmayze (Beirut). Al evento asistieron miembros del Club y antiguos alumnos del IE. También asistieron algunos antiguos alumnos de otras ciudades y países, lo que convirtió el evento en un encuentro verdaderamente internacional.

¡Nos vemos el mes que viene!

The IE Lebanon Club organized a get together for the newly accepted students in the April 2011 intake.  The gathering took place on Sunday, February 20th at The MET Cafe – Beirut Souks.

The events’ goal was to get the new students introduced, as well as to provide them with any tips and advice they would like to get from their predecessors about life at IE and in Madrid.

The events’ atmosphere was friendly and relaxed, and after having a bite to eat and a very informative conversation, it was concluded with wishes of good luck from the alumni to the new students who will be representing Lebanon in IE for the 2011- 2012 years. The success of this event reminds the IE Lebanon club Beirut chapter of the importance of holding such farewell events. They establish bonds between the Lebanon club and the students, and also help in sending the new students to Madrid with an upper hand so that they can do their best in the upcoming academic year.

Finally, the IE Lebanon Club Beirut Chapter wishes the best of luck to the Lebanese students of the April 2011 intake, hoping to see all of them in a little bit more than a year with their valuable IE degrees.

El Club del Líbano del IE organizó una reunión para los estudiantes recién aceptados en la convocatoria de abril de 2011. Esta reunión se celebró el domingo, 20 de febrero, a las 20 horas en The MET Café (Beirut Souks).

El objetivo del acto era presentar a los nuevos estudiantes y ofrecerles los consejos y el asesoramiento de sus predecesores sobre la vida en el IE y en Madrid.

El ambiente fue cordial y relajado, y después de picar algo y mantener una conversación muy productiva, los antiguos alumnos les desearon mucha suerte a los nuevos estudiantes que van a representar al Líbano en el IE durante los años 2011-2012. El éxito de este evento recuerda al IE Lebanon Club Beirut Chapter la importancia de celebrar este tipo de actos de despedida, ya que establecen lazos entre el Club y los estudiantes y ayudan a enviar a los nuevos estudiantes a Madrid en una situación más ventajosa, de tal forma que puedan rendir al máximo en el año académico que está a punto de empezar.

Por último, el IE Lebanon Club Beirut Chapter les desea mucha suerte a los estudiantes libaneses que entrarán en abril de 2011 y espera verles en poco más de un año con sus valiosos títulos del IE.

On December 12, the IE Lebanon Club Beirut Chapter organized a successful interuniversity football tournament, bringing together MBA alums from the top business schools around the world. The six teams participating in the Business School Alumni Soccer Tournament included: AUB (1 and 2), Columbia Business School, ESA, Birmingham and IE Business School. The event was held on the AUB football field at the Charles Hostler Athletic Center.

The purpose of this tournament was to offer graduates of Business Schools with similar backgrounds and interests the opportunity to get to know each other in the spirit of health competition. In addition to expanding their network and getting a workout, participants and their fans enjoyed some delicious food offered by Le Bristol hotel.

Representing the IE Team were: Wael Kechli, George De Chadarevian, Diego De Aristegui, Nadim Azar and Louise Doumet. Despite their valiant efforts, the IE team did not emerge victorious. ESA came in first, Columbia Business School, second and Birmingham University, third.

For the first event of its kind, the IE Lebanon Club Beirut Chapter organizers managed with a great deal of dedication and teamwork to pull off the event. Many alumni responded, saying how young and dynamic IE was and thanking us for organizing this charming event. They even suggested we organize a bigger event with more schools next year.

We hope to organize more events in 2011 to bring together both IE alums and alums from other top business schools.

El 12 de diciembre, el IE Lebanon Club Beirut Chapter organizó un exitoso torneo de fútbol en el que se reunieron alumnos de MBA de las mejores escuelas de negocios del mundo. Los seis equipos participantes en el Business School Alumni Soccer Tournament fueron: AUB (1 y 2), Columbia Business School, ESA, Birmingham e IE Business School. El torneo se celebró en el campo de fútbol de la AUB, en el Charles Hostler Athletic Center.

El propósito de este torneo fue ofrecer a los graduados de escuelas de negocios, con una formación y unos intereses similares, la oportunidad de conocerse en un ambiente de sana competencia. Además de ampliar su red de contactos y hacer ejercicio, los participantes y sus fans disfrutaron de una deliciosa comida preparada por el hotel Le Bristol.

En representación del equipo del IE estuvieron: Wael Kechli, George de Chadarevian, Diego de Aristegui, Nadim Azar y Louise Doumet. A pesar de sus animosos esfuerzos, el equipo del IE no salió victorioso. ESA quedó primero, Columbia Business School, segundo, y Birmingham University, tercero.

Se trata del primer evento de esta naturaleza y los organizadores del IE Lebanon Club Beirut Chapter lograron sacarlo adelante con mucha dedicación y trabajo en equipo. Muchos antiguos alumnos contestaron y comentaron lo joven y dinámico que es el IE y nos dieron las gracias por organizar este genial torneo. Incluso sugirieron que organicemos uno mayor con más escuelas el próximo año.

Esperamos organizar más eventos en 2011 para reunir a antiguos alumnos del IE y de otras escuelas de negocios punteras.

Monday, 29 November – The IE Lebanon Club held a dinner on Monday evening for alumni and current students. The event was hosted by IE and attended by William Davila and Sabine Yazbeck from IE’s International Development Office in Madrid. The dinner was held at Rosé restaurant in Gemmayze where around fifteen guests enjoyed dinner, drinks and dessert in the courtyard. The attendees discussed the ongoing activities of the IE Lebanon Club Beirut Chapter as well as those of the chapter in Madrid. This is one of many events held by the IE Lebanon Club to strengthen the network of IE alums and students in Lebanon.

Lunes, 29 de noviembre. El Club del Líbano del IE celebró una cena el lunes por la noche para antiguos alumnos y estudiantes actuales. El evento fue ofrecido por el IE y a él asistieron William Dávila y Sabine Yazbeck, de la Oficina de Desarrollo Internacional del IE en Madrid. La cena tuvo lugar en el restaurante Rosé, en Gemmayze (un barrio de Beirut), donde unos quince invitados degustaron la cena, las bebidas y el postre en el patio. Los asistentes conversaron acerca de las actividades en curso del Chapter de Beirut del Club del Líbano del IE y de las del Chapter en Madrid. Este es uno más de los eventos organizados por el Club del Líbano del IE para consolidar la red de antiguos alumnos y estudiantes actuales en el Líbano.

On November the 2^nd 2010, Christina Westbrooks, Louise Doumet, Wael Kechli and George de Chadarevian went to the very charming Spanish embassy in Lebanon to meet with his H.E. Juan Carlos Gafo – Ambassador of Spain in Lebanon.

After a small accompanied wait around the embassy quarters, the club members met with the Spanish Ambassador in his personal office. As would any typical meeting in Beirut, it started with a cup of coffee and a brief political discussion, then quickly enough the discussion shifted to the IE Lebanon club Beirut chapter, its activities and the ways in which the backing of the Spanish embassy in Beirut could help the club improve its status in a way that would benefit all of the IE Lebanon Club members, and the relationship between Lebanese students and Spain.

The present club members were all very pleased to notice that the Ambassador was filled with enthusiasm about this new club and both parties agreed on the following main points:

• The IE Lebanon club will be invited to the cultural activities (Conferences and talks, exhibitions, fairs, theaters, movies….) organized by the Spanish embassy in Lebanon.
• The IE Lebanon club – Beirut Chapter, will have to forward the invitations of the events to all the IE alumni resident of Lebanon.
• The Spanish embassy will help in finding new scholarships for the potential new Lebanese students applying to IE.
• The IE Lebanon club, Beirut Chapter, will do its best to represent their school at every occasion by attending the different events organized by the Spanish embassy.
• The Ambassador gave the club members a contact inside the Spanish consulate to follow-up all consular matters with directly.

The meeting ended with a souvenir picture in the embassy gardens, and a promise from both sides to keep in touch for a lot of future collaboration.

El 2 de noviembre de 2010, Christina Westbrooks, Louise Doumet, Wael Kechli y George de Chadarevian visitaron la preciosa embajada española en el Líbano para reunirse con S.E. Juan Carlos Gafo, Embajador de España en el Líbano.

Tras una breve visita guiada por la sede de la embajada, los miembros del Club se encontraron con el embajador en su despacho privado. Como ocurre siempre en Beirut, la reunión empezó con una taza de café y una breve conversación sobre política, para pasar rápidamente al IE Lebanon Club Beirut Chapter, sus actividades y las formas en que la embajada española en Beirut podría ayudar al Club a mejorar su estatus, de tal forma que todos sus miembros y la relación entre los estudiantes libaneses y España salgan beneficiados.

A los actuales miembros del Club les alegró comprobar que el Embajador estaba entusiasmado con este nuevo club y ambas partes acordaron los siguientes puntos básicos:

• El Club del Líbano del IE será invitado a las actividades culturales (conferencias y charlas, exposiciones, ferias, obras de teatro, películas…) organizadas por la embajada española en el Líbano.
• El IE Lebanon Club Beirut Chapter tendrá que remitir las invitaciones a los eventos a todos los antiguos alumnos del IE que residan en el Líbano.
• La embajada española prestará su ayuda para encontrar nuevas becas para aquellos estudiantes libaneses que quieran estudiar en el IE.
• El IE Lebanon Club Beirut Chapter hará todo lo que esté en su mano para representar al Centro en todo momento al asistir a los diferentes eventos organizados por la embajada española.
• El Embajador puso a los miembros del Club en contacto con un funcionario del consulado español para que puedan tratar cualquier cuestión consular directamente con él.

La reunión concluyó con una fotografía de recuerdo en los jardines de la embajada y la promesa de ambas partes de mantenerse en contacto para incrementar la colaboración en el futuro.
