Towards the end of January a nice number of IE alumni met at vibrant Loft 5, located in the heart of the newly developing “Europaallee” quarter of Zurich. Besides celebrating the mid of a hopefully mild Winter this year, the main aim was to thank Franka Schäffler and Gregor Minder for over 7 years of great work in launching and managing this relatively young alumni chapter.

Nowadays the IE Zurich Alumni chapter continues to rapidly grow and reached already more than 100 members of which approximately 20 to 30 meet on a regular base.

For 2014, the new management board consisting of Isabella Grandi and Patrick Kramer has big plans: “We’d like to continue the work based on the great foundation that Franka and Gregor laid, strengthen our ties to our Alma Mater in Madrid and organize events to exchange experiences, network and have fun within a relaxed but professional and smart community of like-minded people”.

IE Switzerland Alumni Club Events

On June 5, 2013, IE Business School and IE University organized a Master Class in Geneva for potential future students and IE alumni who are currently working in Switzerland. The event was open to IE alumni, other top business school alumni and to those interested in studying at IE.

The event was aimed at prospective candidates of all IE programmes. Considering the professional and personal demands of each individual, IE offers an online application form, along with a rolling admissions process. As such, there are no submission deadlines for any particular intake. However, it is highly recommended that you present your application roughly one year prior to the commencement of the programme that you are interested in as intakes usually close well before the beginning of the programme. The IE Switzerland representative, Vanessa de Gruyter [Germany@ie.edu], was present to guide potential MBA students by providing information on a one-to-one basis and by completing profile assessments.

Additionally, information on how IE helps qualified students finance their programme can be found at www.ie.edu/financialaid.

Ignacio de la Torre visited Geneva, and Zurich, to hold a Master Class about Finance. The topics were diverse and he found inspiration from all over the world. It was incredible to see what is possible when we look to the past for answers to the future.

Following each conference, participants had a great time getting to know one another and finding new contacts for their networks.

Thank you to everybody who came to the events and we hope to see you soon at our upcoming events, which include a Rooftop Party at Hotel Metropole in Geneva on Thursday, September 12th, 2013. The event is hosted by IE Business School Alumni and SAMBA, the MBA Swiss Association. You can see pictures of the past Rooftop Party here.

There will be a rich food buffet and unlimited drinks until 21h30 (wines, soft drinks and water)! Enjoy the company of other top business school alumni while overlooking Lake Geneva and the city.

The IE Alumni Geneva Club will also organize a padel event at Geneva Country club.

We all love to gather for a snowball fight and not only kids! On the 16th of December, IE alumni and their families enjoyed a Sunday brunch at “Le Pyramus”, the Jardin Botanique restaurant in Geneva. Kids from 4 months to 12 years old had fun doing a variety of activities outside in the kid’s park or in the mini-zoo. In addition to the animals found in traditional parks, such as deer, peacocks and flamingos, IE alumni children discovered ancient races of indigenous and often endangered animals. Actually, the “Jardin botanique” of Geneva raises chickens, goats and sheep for a National Safeguard Program in collaboration with the Foundation ProSpecieRara.

Luckily for all of us, the brunch consisted of a buffet ranging from fish to chicken. Croissant lovers were able to feast on a fine selection of specialties during the meal, allowing children to eat at their own pace and parents to have lunch inside whilst other parents were busy looking after the children in the kid’s park. We also had buffet delicacies including soup, salads, cold cuts, cheese, fruit juice, salad and desserts.

We would like to thank the 32 participants and the restaurant “Le Pyramus”, who proposed the Sunday brunch buffet, which became a delightful gathering between IE alumni and their families. Brunch is priced at CHF 28 per person and CHF 12 for children and is available every weekend and public holiday from 11:30 pm to 1430 pm.

We chose the brunch after 3 years of having dinner in Hotel Metropole. The attendees expressed their desire to repeat the experience in the first semester of 2013. Join fellow alumni ( Twitter IE alumni Geneva LinkedIn groupIE alumni Swiss blog) to swap stories and share photos! Please go to the IE alumni website to get more information or to register. IE Switzerland Alumni Club representatives are Franka Schaeffler and Gregor Minder for Zurich based alumni and Servane Claudel and Antoine Caffin for Geneva/Lausanne based alumni.

IE Summer Cocktail in Geneva

The IE Geneva Club organized the event on the rooftop of the Metropôle Hotel, a famous location for its superb views of the lake and jet d’eau of the very old hotel built in 1854 and situated in the heart of Geneva and right on the lakeshore.

The party was opened to non-IE Business School friends and alumni from top MBA from SAMBA. More than 30 alumni gathered together, even though Spain was playing Euro football semi-finals!

A joint activity has been proposed by IE Zurich & Geneva Clubs to all IE alumni on Sunday 26th August: Dragon Boat Trophy.

If you can remember, last year´s IE boat -with Geneva and Zurich alumni- reached the final and came 4th in our first ever participation. Both clubs have joined efforts to renew this fun experience and if you are up to the challenge and would like to join us at the 7th Joint Alumni Dragon Boat Race as a paddler, please contact Antoine (Antoine.caffin@gmail.com) for Geneva-based Alumni or Gregor (Gregor.Minder@gmx.net) for Zurich-based Alumni by email.

IE ALUMNI REACH FINALS AT DRAGON BOAT RACE IN ZURICH

Escrito el 6 septiembre 2011 por Alumni en Geographic

On Sunday, August 28th, IE Business School Alumni participated for the first time in the 6th annual Dragon Boat rowing race organized by the Swiss Association of MBA’s (SAMBA) competing against Alumni from other top Business schools such as IMD, Kellogg, Insead, Bocconi, St. Gallen, and Stanford, amongst others.

Dragon Boat Racing has ancient Chinese origins. Last Sunday Dragon Boat Racing involved teams of ten paddlers in a 9 metre boat with a drummer and helm. There is no other paddle sport in which 12 people work together to create a Team result rewarded through the efforts of the whole crew, rather than a few individual performances. That is the greatness of Dragon Boating.

During this sunny day at the Zurich Lake, over 200 Alumni, families and friends mingled, networked and enjoyed watching the 120 participants working hard at their rowing skills on ten different boats representing ten business schools.

Previous rowing experience was not required, which forced most of us to be fast learners and cooperate in ways that reminded us of our good old days as IE Business School students! After three elimination rounds, our IE Alumni Team managed to classify for the final round, reaching a well-deserved fourth place! Well done!!!

Approximately 30 IE Alumni attended this fun event coming from all corners of Switzerland (Geneva, Basel, Lausanne, Zug, etc) making this day even more special and full of new acquaintances.

A special thanks goes to the hardworking rowing team:  Marc Prager (Captain), Patrick Kramer (Drummer) and Rocio Fernandez,  Kaspar Ernits,  Ambar Rivero, Henry Kalbe, Leonardo Todaro, Tommaso Cacurio, Enrique Melero, Ricardo Novella, Roland Antonopolous, Matthias Eichholz, Helen De Haan, Astrid Wyss, Servane Claudel, all paddlers.

Last but not least, we warmly thank Franka Schaeffler and Servane Claudel for the logistics, coordination, cheering and great support and IE Alumni sponsorship!. Congratulations!!!

They came from far and wide, from Texas, Vevey, Lausanne, Rolle, Nyon, Geneva left and right bank to the Metropôle Hotel in Geneva for the  second “Summer and the city” IE / SAMBA cocktail. In excess of 60 Alumni dined on finger food and had access to the bar on the rooftop, famous location  for his superb views of the lake and jet d’eau, of the  very old hotel built in 1854 and situated in the heart of Geneva and right on the lakeshore. During this networking event, alumni from INSEAD, IMD, HEC Paris, Wharton, Columbia, Stanford, Stern School of Business, IESE Business School, SDA Bocconi and IE Business School laughed, exchanged last business trends, told stories and made more connections. Among the alumni in attendance was Enrique Melero, IE Executive MBA class of 2005, an entrepreneur, founder of the famous www.bebe.ch. The web site was created in 1998 by Enrique Melero and his wife shortly before the birth of the first of their 4 children. “We wanted to use our knowledge of parenting and we developed a community based on exchange. If you have a question, you can find the answers. Last time it took me 4 minutes to get an answer to a very specific question! It is a sort of glocals.com (but created 9 years before) for parents. You can get in touch with other parents, staying at home”.

The web site had become a reference in his field, covering all related with babies, with more than half a million visits per month. “Bebe.ch is a different social network in which parents share their problems and look for advice during the most important period of their lives: conception to pregnancy and first months of life of their babies.”

Enrique gave us 3 of their preferred locations for families in Geneva:

“Parc La Grange on Quai Gustave Ador is Geneva’s largest park encompassing 12000 square meters along the lake. The park contains the largest rose garden in the city and a horticultural center. During the summer, the Verdure Theatre on site hosts free concerts every Wednesday and Friday. “

“Another location of interest for people that are living near jonction is Park Batie Woods “bois de la batie”, a small animal farm in the city, fantastic for children and makes a great afternoon out. It is a refuge of wildlife near the city center, covering some 20 hectares, pretty popular among joggers; you can have relaxing hiking trails through the park.

« Cheetah-Baby Plage » is the beach of Geneva and is one of the top locations for families; strollers; sand shovels swimmers and parents with sunscreen “. He also recommends also pretty villages like Yvoire and Hermance along the lake.

We would like to thank you Antoine Caffin, IE Executive MBA class of 2009 and Servane Claudel, head of IE alumni, MBA class of 2008 and SDA Bocconi alumnus Marc Perut for the organization.
