Exciting first half of 2014 in Zurich

Escrito el 29 Julio 2014 por Alumni en Clubs & Activities, Geographic

The first half of 2014 has been exciting in terms of events organized in Zurich…!!!

We would like to mention, first, the IE Master Class & Networking event, held on May 5th at the Widder Bar in Zurich, with Professor Balvinder Singh Powar as lead speaker. Balvinder, an Associate Professor at IE Business School and IE Business & Finance alumni is a board member and director at BOOSTER Space Industries. His fascinating talk about “Leadership in Untested Markets – From Moon Landing to Sub-Orbital Commercial Space” focused on conflict resolution, leadership, mediation skills for leaders and how individuals can inspire each other to take responsibility and dream big!

A special thanks for this event, in particular, to Vanessa De Gruyter, IE Representative of IE in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, for organizing and taking care of this event!

Towards the end of May,  we had another event, our first IE Entrepreneurs Panel , hostedat UBS Europaallee, with the purpose of going back to the roots of IE and put more focus on entrepreneurs values and stories shared with us by fellow IE alumni.

Adrian Hilti, Michael Müller and Pierre-Louis Beau presented their extraordinary entrepreneurship adventures, sharing with the IE community their failures and their successes, and opening up to an touchy discussion with the participants on the challenges and the opportunities to become an entrepreneur.
Each entrepreneur had 15 minutes of insights into their business ventures:

  1. Adrian Hilti – www.busuu.com; Busuu is a social network for learning languages, with more than 45 million users globally, Busuu was launched in May 2008 and is the world’s largest social network for language learning.
  2. Michael Müller – www.nezasa.com ;  Nezasa is an individual online travel agency based on local support. Its model is based on the service and comfort of offline agencies, combined with the benefits of an online platform.
  3. Pierre-Louis Beau – www.inomed.ch; the company, created in 2006, has become one of the European leaders in the design and manufacture of customized sterilization trays for orthopedic, trauma and spinal ancillaries.

Afterwards we continued the discussions and the gathering together in one of the nearby bars over some drinks.

On behalf of the IE Alumni Zurich chapter, we would like to thank all the participants that attended both events and send special regards to our inspiring entrepreneurs for their contribution in sharing with the IE Club in Zurich their experiences.

Towards the end of January a nice number of IE alumni met at vibrant Loft 5, located in the heart of the newly developing “Europaallee” quarter of Zurich. Besides celebrating the mid of a hopefully mild Winter this year, the main aim was to thank Franka Schäffler and Gregor Minder for over 7 years of great work in launching and managing this relatively young alumni chapter.

Nowadays the IE Zurich Alumni chapter continues to rapidly grow and reached already more than 100 members of which approximately 20 to 30 meet on a regular base.

For 2014, the new management board consisting of Isabella Grandi and Patrick Kramer has big plans: “We’d like to continue the work based on the great foundation that Franka and Gregor laid, strengthen our ties to our Alma Mater in Madrid and organize events to exchange experiences, network and have fun within a relaxed but professional and smart community of like-minded people”.

IE Switzerland Alumni Club Events

On June 5, 2013, IE Business School and IE University organized a Master Class in Geneva for potential future students and IE alumni who are currently working in Switzerland. The event was open to IE alumni, other top business school alumni and to those interested in studying at IE.

The event was aimed at prospective candidates of all IE programmes. Considering the professional and personal demands of each individual, IE offers an online application form, along with a rolling admissions process. As such, there are no submission deadlines for any particular intake. However, it is highly recommended that you present your application roughly one year prior to the commencement of the programme that you are interested in as intakes usually close well before the beginning of the programme. The IE Switzerland representative, Vanessa de Gruyter [Germany@ie.edu], was present to guide potential MBA students by providing information on a one-to-one basis and by completing profile assessments.

Additionally, information on how IE helps qualified students finance their programme can be found at www.ie.edu/financialaid.

Ignacio de la Torre visited Geneva, and Zurich, to hold a Master Class about Finance. The topics were diverse and he found inspiration from all over the world. It was incredible to see what is possible when we look to the past for answers to the future.

Following each conference, participants had a great time getting to know one another and finding new contacts for their networks.

Thank you to everybody who came to the events and we hope to see you soon at our upcoming events, which include a Rooftop Party at Hotel Metropole in Geneva on Thursday, September 12th, 2013. The event is hosted by IE Business School Alumni and SAMBA, the MBA Swiss Association. You can see pictures of the past Rooftop Party here.

There will be a rich food buffet and unlimited drinks until 21h30 (wines, soft drinks and water)! Enjoy the company of other top business school alumni while overlooking Lake Geneva and the city.

The IE Alumni Geneva Club will also organize a padel event at Geneva Country club.

Join fellow alumni (Twitter IE alumni GenevaLinkedIn groupIE alumni Swiss blog) to swap stories and share photos! Please go to the IE alumni website to get more information or to register.

On Sunday the 31st of August, IE Alumni participated for the second time in the annual Dragon Boat rowing race organized by the Swiss Association of MBA’s (SAMBA) in Zürich.

They competed against 9 other Business Schools. The weather was perfect, the lake was warm, and they had a very cool Swiss coxswain and one of the best drummers! Pamela, the drummer, did not only look the part, she was also very strict and loud enough to give them directions.

The race was around 300 meters and each team had to compete in several rounds. Unfortunately, after the IE teams first training session at 10:00 AM in the morning they realized that they should have eaten a lot more spinach in order to train their muscles for the event.

The IE kit was one of the best; simple, elegant and practical. The team was also one of the most diverse in terms of nationalities and sex.

The day was a huge success in terms of racing and networking. All of the IE team members would like to thank  two special people that helped them out; one of their rowers fell sick leaving them with 9 instead of 10 rowers, but thankfully two ladies joined the team at the very last minute and saved the day.

IE MASTER CLASS IN ZURICH

Escrito el 16 Noviembre 2011 por Alumni en Special Events

On November 8th, 2011, approximately 60 young professionals, including 25 Zurich-based alumni members and 35 candidates participated in a lively IE Master Class Session at the Marriott Hotel in Zurich. The class was led by David Bach, Professor of Strategy and Economic Environment and Dean of MBA Programs at IE.

This particular session titled: “Creating Competitive Advantage Beyond the Market” addressed and analyzed the fact that nowadays companies and their bottom lines are increasingly affected by government policy, changing regulations, activist pressure and media scrutiny. A lively discussion ensued and many participants gave their opinions and insights into how can and/or should companies respond to these growing “nonmarket” pressures.

Towards the end of the evening all candidates left with a better idea of MBA class dynamics, while IE alumni were given the opportunity to reminisce about their time as an IE student and reconnect with fellow classmates.

IE finance professor Ignacio de la Torre challenged the conventional methods of economic forecasting during two thought-provoking Master Classes in Zurich and Geneva, Switzerland this month. The talks by de la Torre, who is also Academic Director of the Master in Finance programs at IE, served as an introduction to a new Global Master in Finance program that IE is launching in Fall 2011.

During the events, de la Torre offered several fresh perspectives on what factors can help predict global GDP, ranging from changes in geopolitics to education trends. With an audience of over 60 people between the two cities, Professor De La Torre led a thought-provoking and engaging discussion.

The audience included both IE alumni currently working in Switzerland, candidates interested in IE Master and MBA programs, and executives from the Swiss business community. The events were a wonderful opportunity for networking and both events were followed by an informal cocktail where attendees had the chance to mingle and continue the lively debate from the Master Classes. Thanks to everyone who attended and a special thanks to Ignacio de la Torre…. Let’s see if his financial predictions for the year come true!
