Venture Day Lisbon2014copiaThe 2nd IE Venture Day Lisbon was part of the Lisbon Investment Summit, with more than 450 registered and 300 attendees organized in a joint effort of IE and Beta-I with the participation of the European Commission.

Thanks to all the alumni that made it and especially to Domingos Cruz (CCA-Ontier, LLM 2006), our sponsor, and Pedro Trinite (TTR, International MBA 2007), Scott Witters (Glownet, MBA 2003) and Tobias Schirmer (BDMI, International MBA 2007), our speakers.

The winning startup, Pharmassistant, took home an 80K investment from Smart Equity. The jury responsible for evaluating the pitches of the startups included Mike Butcher (Techcrunch editor), Tobias Schirmer (IE alumnus and BDMI), Oriol Juncosa (Nauta Capital), Itxaso del Palacio (EC1 Capital), Paloma Castellano (Wayra) and Carla Pimenta (EDP Ventures). Vertequip was the most voted project by the audience of more than 300 people and Coolfarm was chosen as the best pitch.

Speakers and participants gave great praise: Mike Butcher said he’d be happy to promote next year’s event, Fausto Boni (360 Capital Partners) was overwhelmed with the high quality of the pitches, Oriol Juncosa said the event was excellent, many of the investors will follow up with one or more pitching startups and Anshuman Vohra (Bulldog Gin CEO) drove 6 hours, from and to the Algarve, on one day to be there!

IE and the UK Trade & Investment department joined to offer entrepreneurs a space to pitch ideas to potential investors, win start-up prizes and meet hundreds of others from the start-up community. Those who attended the event got to listen to influential speakers, network with successful entrepreneurs, and watch the finalist pitchers.

VentureDay2014UK3The IE UK office launched the inaugural UK Venture Day with a reception at the Spanish Embassy in London attended by over 150 guests including IE alumni, VIP stakeholders and entrepreneurs. The Spanish Ambassador opened the reception with Santiago Iniguez, Dean of IE who then introduced the guest speakers Emma Sinclair, the youngest person to float their company on the UK stock exchange, and Diego Megia, MD of Barclays Treasury.

The following day the Venture Day, held in association with the UKTI, took place at Wayra with over 300 attendees and 20 renowned speakers (including TV presenters, the largest VCs in Europe, top entrepreneurs, the Head of AIM at the London Stock Exchange). We received over 130 applications to pitch from countries as far afield as Mexico and Pakistan. The ten finalists were pitching to win: places on the incredible UKTI Sirius programme (£12,000 per team member, visa endorsement and a 6 month accelerator place), a shortlist to Wayra, flights to Madrid & 3 months at the IE Venture Lab or a kriticalmass PR and crowdfunding campaign for a positive impact project. Six out of the ten independently selected finalists were either IE students of graduates.

This one day conference, co-organized with BETA-I, brought together some of Iberia’s most influential early stage investors and entrepreneurs to share their experiences. The agenda included speakers like Paul Ford, José Martín Cabiedes, Carlos Blanco and IE alumni Jose Haslam, Daniel Neves and Eiso Kant (IE University), among many others. The investor panel and reverse pitch by Spanish and Portuguese investors, with Espirito Santo Investment, Jose Miguel Herrero, Pedro Janela, Santiago Salazar and Hugo Pereira, to name a few, was viewed as a great opportunity for entrepreneurs to understand how to better present their start-ups to investors.

The startup competition, with 10 finalists from IE and beyond, had a 40K investment prize from Eggnest, as well as best pitch prize and a scholarship for the Owners and Entrepreneurs Management Program! Ana Margarida Constantino, IE alum, won the €40k investment prize for BePetly.com, VitalID won the best pitch and Vivian Vendeirinho won the O&E! Over 270 people turned up to Venture Day Lisbon, and as many live streamed it, which made it IE’s biggest International Venture Day to date!
